The middle of Summer means a surprisingly eclectic week with a bunch of bands you never thought you’d see live again!
Thursday, July 18th
Counting Crows, The Wallflowers at America’s Cup Pavilion
It amazes me that Counting Crows have been together, consistently, for 22 years. Never a hiatus or anything of the sort, and only very few line up changes. And, yes, they are nowhere near as popular as they were in the 90’s, they are still putting out strong material, and have gotten better as a live act.
The Raghu Dixit Project at Yoshi’s – San Francisco
Friday, July 19th
Coolzey, Sunbeam Road, Mr Goodnight at Hemlock Tavern
Coolzey is a lo-fi rapper and onetime collaborator with the one and only Peaches Christ. He’s bringing his heartfelt brand of hip hop to Hemlock Tavern for a fun way to kick off your weekend.
Mister Loveless, Transfer, Dante Elephante at Bottom Of The Hill
The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, AEON, Rings of Saturn, Thy Art Is Murder at The Regency Ballroom
Saturday, July 20th
Qui, Feral Ohms, True Mutans at The Knockout
Qui make aggro noise rock for people against melodies. Fronted by David Yow, the animalistic frontguy of The Jesus Lizard, Qui lurch across their grotesque songs like a capering Gollum. They’re the kind of band that you might imagine would name a song “Gash.” And they did. (Christopher Rogers)
Mystic Rage, Servile, Soulless Demise at Kupe Lounge
Sunday, July 21st
David Byrne & St Vincent at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Love This Giant, the brilliant record by David Byrne and St Vincent that came out last year, was a work of art. The tour was even more amazing! Not only did they do the entire album beginning to end, they rearranged several tracks from David Byrne, St Vincent, and The Talking Heads for 10 piece brass section, drums, and two guitars. Happily, they are doing an encore performance of this amazing set at The Fox this evening.
Buck O Nine, Jokes For Feelings, Skandalism, Imposters, Defunked at 924 Gilman
Buck O Nine are even still performing?!?! WOW!!!!
Monday, July 22nd
Colleen Greene, Sisu, Burnt Palms at Cafe du Nord
Colleen Green is the reigning queen of stoner rock. She’s a one woman Donnas, putting out fuzzy, sludgy rock and roll goodness. Can you think of any better way to spend a Monday? I can’t!
Bastille at Rickshaw Stop
Tuesday, July 23rd
Black Flag, Good For You at Oakland Metro Operahouse
There are two bands playing the music of Black Flag currently on the road. They both contain members of the band Black Flag from it’s original touring period. However, this is the only version Black Flag that features Greg Ginn, the only consistent member of the band. He wrote all of the music, most of the lyrics, and played guitar on nearly every song. The singer for this project is the charismatic Ron Reyes, the lead singer of the band when they were featured in the legendary film “Decline Of Western Civilization.”
Amy Grant, Brandon Heath at San Jose Civic Auditorium
Wednesday, July 24th
John Mayer, Phillip Phillips at Sleep Train Amphitheatre
