The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Joel Gion & The Primary Colors at The Fox Theater – Oakland
When I first saw The Brian Jonestown Massacre, way back in the late 90’s at Great American Music Hall, I didn’t think this band was going to survive the show, let alone still be playing fifteen years later. It was a beautiful and messy set, and the tambourine player’s hand was literally covered in blood by the end of the set. Since this is a much larger room, I’m expecting there to be at least 6x the blood.

Nels Cline is the guitarist for Wilco. His records are filed under “jazz” in most record stores. Neither of these things will help you imagine what The Nels Cline Singers sound like. He doesn’t sing. He does play guitar like a madman. This will be a blissful evening of destructive noise. Please schedule ear drum replacement surgery the next day.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, Poolside, Ra Ra Riot, Crash at Sharon Meadow – Golden Gate Park
Everyone already knows Edward Sharpe. Either you like them or you don’t at this point. Poolside, however, are the real reason to go to this show. If anyone saw them at Treasure Island this year, they will remember that they managed to use their summery jams to heat up the bitter cold. Since we are experiencing the warmest Spring in a number of years, there is a good chance it will get so hot people will faint. So, please, remember to hydrate at this show.

Carrie Brownstein at The Nourse Theater
It’s been 20 years since the release of Excuse 17’s debut record, a record that helped define both Riot Grrl and Emo. In the last two decades, she started Sleater – Kinney, probably the best band ever, and, in a surprise turn of events, spent her time after Sleater – Kinney becoming the face of television sketch comedy. Tonight we get the rare treat of hearing Ms Brownstein discuss her entire career.
