Big Sam’s Funky Nation at The Chapel

Good funk music is almost like a religious experience. So it’s apropos that Big Sam’s Funky Nation is playing The Chapel. Bring your dancing shows, because we’ve got two sets of horn heavy funkiness brewing.

Dead Men Walking, Jello Biafra, Barb Wire Girls at Brick & Mortar Music Hall

Friday, May 8th

The Sonics, Barrence Whitfield & The Savages at The Fillmore

The Sonics have been widely regarded as the first ever punk band. They’ve been doing aggressive, primal rock n roll music since 1960. 55 years after they first popped onto the scene, they’ve released a record that sounds as vital as when they first got together. Can any other band say that?

New Kids On The Block, TLC, Nelly at SAP Center in San Jose

Saturday, May 9th

Leftöver Crack, MC Lars, Embers, Voodoo Dolly, The Schlurs at Palace Theater – Oakland

Leftöver Crack are one of the silliest bands in punk. However, the spread of HIV amongst drug users is not silly. Nonetheless, these guys are headlining a benefit concert to help make sure that IV drug users have easy access to clean syringes. So, a fun band for a good cause. Seems like the right way to spend your evening to me!

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, We Are Hex at The Independent

Sunday, May 10th

Ministry at The Regency

Al Jourgenson is one of the most innovative performers in music history. His main band, Ministry, keeps threatening to call it quits. So you will probably regret missing this one.
