Wednesday, May 5th
Julieta Venegas, Ceci Bastida at The Fox Theater – Oakland
As I may have alluded to before in this column, the accordion may be the sexiest instrument ever. A lot of people play it for laughs, but Ms Venegas plays it with a pure passion and intensity, so much so that you will never be able to make a polka joke again.
Coheed & Cambria, Circa Survive, Torche at The Warfield
Cannibal Corpse, 1349, Skeletonwitch, Lechorous Nocturne at Slim’s
Thursday, May 6th
Murder City Devils, Mikki & The Mauses at Great American Music Hall
Many years ago, I became obsessed with a band called Pretty Girls Make Graves. Along the way, I learned that their bass player left a highly successful band to join them. That band was Murder City Devils, and their sound was a sound that I had been chasing for years!! They play a meaty, thick brand of rock n roll that quenched my thirst for a sound that I wasn’t aware of. Alas, my dream of experiencing this joyous sound is finally coming true! (Also at Slim’s 5/7)
Tussle, Javelin, Bronze at The Rickshaw Stop
Kevin Seconds, Street Eaters, Little Boy Blue, Ryan Banks at 924 Gilman St (7 PM Show)
Friday, May 7th
Wallpaper., Oona, DJ Morale at The Independent
I just need to say it again. Spinning Platters has a mad crush on Wallpaper. Just come down and get down with us at the Indy tonight!
Los Campesinos!, Signals at The Regency Ballroom
Saturday, May 8th
Kate Nash, Supercute at Bottom Of The Hill
Kate Nash’s most recent record, My Best Friend Is You, is an amazing barrage of rock n roll aggression that very few people would have expected from her. Her lyrics have gotten wittier and a bit more sarcastic, as well. This show will be amazing, and it’s sold out, so you should catch her at Amoeba in SF at 2 pm instead.
Face To Face, Circle Jerks, The Adolescents, Jughead’s Revenge, La Plebe (City Underground Festival) at Fort Mason
Sunday, May 9th
Fucked Up, Hank IV, Hollerado at Rickshaw Stop
Fucked Up are the greatest live punk band working right now. Hollerado are the best power pop band that I have ever seen. I have no idea what a Hank IV is, but it’s going to be pretty awesome, too, I bet.
Monday, May 10th
Jazzschool Institute Vocal Performance Class presents Kind Of Blue in it’s entirety at Yoshi’s – Oakland
One of the greatest instrumental jazz records ever, as performed by an all-voice ensemble. This will either be the greatest thing ever, or pure sonic hell. Either way, worth checking out!
The Besnard Lakes, Happy Hollows, The New Slave at The Independent
Tuesday, May 11th
The Minks, The Bang, The She’s at The Bottom Of The Hill
There is very little respect for cover bands, but if you are going to enjoy one, The Minks are about as awesome as it gets. They play Kinks songs, and they play them well. Besides, despite all of the rumors, The Kinks aren’t reuniting.
Wednesday, May 12th
MDC, The Restarts, La Plebe, Dopecharge at Thee Parkside
The best thing about this classic Bay Area punk band with the ever-changing acronym is that, unlike a lot of their peers that are on the reunion train that only go out and play songs from their heyday, these guys are still writing new songs with the vitality of their days long past.
Jakob Dylan and Three Legs featuring Neko Case & Kelly Hogan, The Felice Brothers, honeyhoney at The Regency Ballroom
