A Tribute To Steve Brodsky at The Lodge at The Regency Ballroom

Steve Brodsky was a very dear friend of the bay area music scene who recently lost his battle with leukemia. He managed many, many great bands such as Wallpaper. and Primus, and left a huge mark on our scene. Tonight at The Regency Ballroom, an array of local talents will be performing some of his favorite songs, and we will also be treated to deliciousness from Tacolicious, Jameson Irish Whiskey, and Ninkasi Brewery. The best part? All proceeds will go towards The National Children’s Leukemia Fund.

Maps & Atlases, Young Man, Cannons and Clouds at Rickshaw Stop

Sometimes you just need a good indie rock show. Neither Maps & Atlases are out to rewrite the musical playbook. They are just there to provide you with a good, solid evening of bright music designed to separate yourself from the work week, and pairs nicely with an inexpensive whiskey and a PBR.

The Coup at Oakland Marriott Hotel & Convention Center

Oakland political hip hop legends turned psychedelic rock powerhouse are one of the best live bands you will ever see. This show is a benefit for the National Lawyers Guild, an organization that focuses on the legal defense of people working to protect our civil rights and liberties. So, for $15 you get one of the best bands ever, and you feel good about the money you spent.

Marnie Stern, SISU, EV Kain at Rickshaw Stop

This bill is ridiculous. We have the noise funk freakouts of EV Kain, featuring former members of Sacramento’s legendary Hella. We have the beautiful shoegaze of SISU. And we have Marnie Stern. One of my all time favorite musicians. She shreds like there is no tomorrow. She can write a brilliant song. Her blog is one of the funniest things you will ever read, too! There is nothing this woman can’t do.

Built To Spill, Ugly Winner, Slam Dunk, Junior Rocket Scientist at Slim’s

Idaho’s second-favorite export are sporting a new rhythm section. See how a new drummer and bassist affect band guy Doug Martsch’s already-elastic guitar rock songs. Doug’s been putting extra fervency into his live performances post-“There Is No Enemy.” These factors in play make certain that the song renditions this weekend will be something new. The Bad Plus at Yoshi’s – Oakland

Piano, bass, drums. Nothing more. You don’t need anymore. This experimental jazz combo locks into such a tight, brilliant groove, that you don’t realize how few people are involved in making such a brilliant noise.

Stereo Total, Super Adventure Club, Giggle Party at Rickshaw Stop

French / German synth pop groundbreakers are coming into their 2oth year as band, and they are still putting our brilliant pieces of quirky pop in all it’s mulit-lingual glory.
