The best 7 days of live music ever? Maybe… Read on!
Thursday, April 12th
Lee Ranaldo at Amoeba Music – San Francisco
Now that Sonic Youth are no more, it’s kind of exciting to see what will come next for everyone…. Ranaldo maybe the most underrated member of the group, and, hopefully, this means that he will get a chance to steal the spotlight.
Melvins, Unsane at Great American Music Hall
Miike Snow, Penguin Prison at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Friday, April 13th
Jonathan Richman at The New Parish
Jonathan Richman is a local hero and a living legend. The man is a one of the greatest living performers, and one of the finest songwriters in the history of rock.
Youth Lagoon, Porcelain Raft at The Independent
Monkey, Brass Hysteria at Grant & Green
Saturday, April 14th
Yonder Mountain String Band, Brown Bird at The Fillmore
Richard Buckner, Tim Cohen at Brick & Mortar Music Hall
Sunday, April 15th
GIVERS, White Arrows at Slim’s
GIVERS were my favorite band to land on my radar in 2011. They are equal parts musically proficient, sonically adventurous, and spastically danceable, all with the emotional purity that comes from being young. There are a lot of show options this week, but this band will make you happier than any other show this week, you just don’t know it yet.
Ximena Sarinana at The New Parish
Jimmy Cliff, Grass Child at The Uptown Theatre – Napa
Monday, April 16th
Counting Crows, Mean Creek at The Fox Theater – Oakland
There seems to be a bit of 90’s nostalgia in the air… It’s great because a lot of forgotten bands are making the rounds again. One of my favorites was Counting Crows, and, well, I’m really excited to finally see this band live.
Kasabian, Hacienda at The Fillmore
Tuesday, April 17th
Pulp, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti at The Warfield
I’ve been waiting to for this moment since sophomore year of high school…
Foxy Shazam, Maniac, Cadaver Dogs at Rickshaw Stop
Which sucks, because this band’s singer eats cigarettes! And the openers will melt your face off… So please bring your slow melting face.
Wanda Jackson, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside at The Regency Ballroom
Wednesday, April 18th
Refused, The Hives, The Bronx at The Warfield
Refused. The band that could barely play small clubs on it’s last American tour are now selling out several times larger. Why is that? Maybe because there assaultive take on punk rock was a little too progressive for our poor ears in 1997. People were listening to mellower music. In the 15 years since this band last graced the stage, we have a whole new generation looking for music that is both intelligent and aggressive. Refused are that band.
Wild Flag, EMA at The Fillmore
Which makes it all the more depressing that Wild Flag are playing the same night. I hate conflicts. So, here’s 10 minutes of blistering guitar pyrotechnics.
Duncan Sheik & Suzanne Vega at Yoshi’s – SF
