Here’s what’s coming up this week: monsters, bears, and Bruce Hornsby.
• Friday, April 10th
Kowloon Walled City, Replicator, Roland, The Rutabega, Color TV, Alto!, China, Bathyspere at American Steel, Oakland (PRF BBQ day 1)
Kowloon Walled City are the band that best capture the anxieties of the Bay Area right now with songs about some of the things that will destroy us eventually – namely earthquakes, cancer, and unfulfilling work. (And they have a baseball podcast as well!) Heavy slabs of slow, measured tones rubbing against one another like tectonic plates, similar to the work of post-hardcore progenitors Quicksand (NYC). Earthquakes, cancer, and baseball are all cumulative things.
• Saturday, April 11th
Cookie Mongoloid, Whoosie What’s It’s, The Wastedeads, Lost Puppy at El Rio, S.F. (Meat Fest)
Oh, c’mon. These guys play fast and hilariously brutal versions of Sesame Street songs. And the show’s at El Rio. This is one of the easiest shows in history about which one can say “oh c’mon, it’ll be fun.” Brought to you by the letter C.
• Sunday, April 12th
Belle And Sebastian, Real Estate, Perfume Genius at the Greek Theater, U.C. Berkeley Campus
Belle And Sebastian were so much hotter when they were scarce. Now you can find/see B&S any time you’d like.
• Monday, April 13th
The Replacements at The Masonic, S.F.
If you’re over the age of 40, you may have an opinion about The Replacements. If you are between 30 and 40, you know The Replacements from Paul Westerberg having a coupla songs on the “Singles” soundtrack. If you are under 30, maybe your parents will take you to this show and that’s good family bondin’.
• Tuesday, April 14th
Panda Bear at the Independent, S.F.
A brave guy to come into San Francisco this year bearing that name.
• Wednesday, April 15th
Bruce Hornsby at Zellerbach Hall, U.C. Berkeley Campus
Unlike The Replacements, Bruce Hornsby never went away. Bruce Hornsby is still in the game, you guys. That’s just the way it is.
