It feels like SXSW just ended yesterday… I still haven’t quite caught up on my sleep, and my SXSars has kicked in pretty brutally, but nonetheless, I can’t stay away from the live rock n roll for very long… Check this week out! It’s pretty amazing!
Thursday, March 24th
The Kids of 88, Art Vs Science (Popscene) at Rickshaw Stop
The Kids of 88 are merely ok… The reason to drag your booty out on a rainy Thursday night is to catch Australia’s extremely entertaining synth pop trio Art Vs Science. And then sing this song really loud to your coworkers tomorrow:
Liam Finn, The Luyas at The Independent
Naughty By Nature at Yoshi’s – SF
Friday, March 25th
MEN, Lady Tragik, Katastrophe at Rickshaw Stop
Yes, it’s kind of a bummer that Le Tigre are still on siesta, but it’s nice that JD Samson keeps at it. MEN retains the political charge and dance-ability of Le Tigre with a bit more humor. And it will be a killer show!
Ed Kowalcyk at Yoshi’s – SF
You know who this guy is…
Smoking Popes, New Trust, The Hot Toddies at Great American Music Hall
Saturday, March 26th
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Oh Land at The Fox Theater – Oakland
When you think of the great synth groups of the 80’s, how long does it take for you to come up with OMD? This is a group that has been taken for granted, and they destroyed at SXSW last week! They really are still sounding great, and all signs point to this being an awesome show!
An Evening With Sheila E at Yoshi’s – SF
Anyone that caught any of Prince’s Welcome 2 America’s shows in Oakland learned that, not only Prince is still awesome, Sheila E has managed to still sound great, and might actually be hotter than she was 20 years ago… So, if you go to Yoshi’s you will have a great evening of fun music, and you will watch one of Oakland’s living treasures. And, if I forgot to say, she is a total babe.
Sunday, March 27th
Britney Spears at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
Yes. Britney Spears is doing a free show in San Francisco. Sadly, because of rain she moved from in front of the Castro Theater to the cavernous Bill Graham Civic, but we really shouldn’t whine. Because the great BRITNEY SPEARS is doing a FREE SHOW IN SAN FRANCISCO!
Go to it, even though this song kind of sucks:
This one is way better:
Abigail Washburn at Yoshi’s – SF
David Dondero, Franz Nicolay, Boats at Hemlock Tavern
Monday, March 28th
Royksopp, Jon Hopkins at The Regency Ballroom
Crosby & Nash at The Warfield
Tuesday, March 29th
Uh Huh Her, Diamonds Under Fire at Great American Music Hall
Uh Huh Her are the electropop supergroup featuring the amazing Camila Grey of Mellowdrone and Leisha Haley of The Murmurs (and TV’s The L Word). If you are looking for a good time on a Tuesday night, this is probably your best option for dance good times.
Buried At Birth, Seraphim, Outrage, Until Your Heart Stops, Vital Nerve at Sub-Mission Gallery
Tuesday, March 30th
DOM, Heavy Hawaii, Melted Toys at Rickshaw Stop
DOM may look like a bunch of kids that don’t know what they are doing, but when you actually listen to DOM, you will learn otherwise. At first, you think that you are listening to a really good power pop band. Then they start shaking things up, and you get a bit of crazy, yet skilled & blissful noise. Only you can still hum it. They just get it right, and you need to see this band live.
