February is a pretty nutty month for shows in SF. And that’s not just counting Noise Pop… The weeks warming up to Noise Pop are pretty insane, too! So, clear your schedule, and go out to a few shows!
Thursday, February 9th
Chali 2Na, Ren The Vinyl Archeologist, Steelo, Raw-G, Aima The Dreamer at The New Parish
The first time I heard the smooth, deep baritone flow of Chali 2Na was the first Ozomatli record. He is one of the most unique and gifted MC’s I’ve ever heard. He is also one dynamic live performer, which is hard to find in the hip hop world.
The Features, Vanprasta at Cafe du Nord
Lana Del Rey at Amoeba Music – San Francisco
Friday, February 10th & Saturday, February 11th
Social Distortion, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls, Sharks at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Social Distortion are more than just an LA punk band. They are one of the rare bands to break out of the 80’s LA punk scene and into the mainstream. They did this by writing catchy pop songs that everyone can relate to. Opening the show is the young english folk singer, Frank Turner, and UK punkers SHARKS.
Friday, February 10th
Estelle, Elle Varner, Stacy Barthe, Luke James at The New Parish
Los Campesinos!, Parenthetical Girls at Great American Music Hall
Saturday, February 11th & Sunday, February 12th
Nikka Costa, Terraplane Sun at Red Devil Lounge
The worst thing to be is the first person to do something. Nikka Costa beat the blue eyed soul craze by about 3 years. She is just as talented, if not more talented than Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele, but didn’t cross over in the same way. Well, she’s kept trucking, put out her best record in years, and is playing two nights at Red Devil Lounge. And, rumor has it, tickets are moving swiftly, so don’t miss your last chance to see her at such a tiny venue.
Saturday, February 11th
DI, White Trash Debutantes, The Lean, The Lincolns at Uptown Nightclub
Sunday, February 12th
Indian Jewelery, Jealousy, Shakes Gown at Hemlock Tavern
Our editor in chief once called this band “The worst band he’s every seen.” He’s seen hundreds of bands, so this is a pretty esteemed position to be in. I also disagree with him whole heartedly.
Manhattan Transfer at Yoshi’s – Oakland
Monday. February 13th
Richie Beirach and Laurie Antonioli at Yoshi’s – San Francisco
Tuesday, February 14th
T.I.T.S., Uzi Rash, Chris Thayer at Hemlock Tavern
Hemlock Tavern is doin g a special show for Valentine’s Day. It’s a free show, and, well, you get both T.I.T.S. and Uzi Rash. So, basically, exactly what you wanted on Valentine’s Day.
Lenny Kravitz, Raphael Saadiq at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Wednesday, Feburary 15th
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour at The Independent
Looking for a great way to cope with Valentine’s Day? A super fun disco dance party! And that’s what you will get when you go see The Asteroids Galaxy Tour! Instead of crying into your beer, you will dance into your beer!
