It’s the first “weekly show list” of the year, and this is another wonderful and eclectic week for fans of music in the bay area!
Thursday, January 5th
Christopher O’Riley, Matt Haimovitz at Yoshi’s – SF
Two of the most important movers and shakers in 21st Century classical music are playing a very, very special duets set. Christopher O’Riley is the pianist that is best know for taking elements of indie rock, including Arcade Fire and Radiohead melodies and bringing them together with traditional classical music. Matt Haimovitz is a cello prodigy that had his first symphony gig at the age of 15, signed to Deutsche Gramophone at 17, and has be re-inventing the craft every since. These two are doing an unusual set where they are doing 1 set of pre-planned material, and 1 set off setlist.
Friday, January 6th
Grass Widow, Culture Kids, Churches, Wave Array at Uptown Nightclub
Everyone is a little broke after the holidays, so it’s a bit of a godsend when you can find an amazing show for free… Not only do you get a set from the all female, pop punk trio Grass Widow, you get to visit one of Oakland’s coolect venues with some of the best priced drinks in town. What’s not to love?
Return To Mono, Stripmall Architecture, TIGERcat at Rickshaw Stop
Saturday, January 7th
Dick Dale, The Bitter Honeys, The Dirty Hand Family Band at Uptown Nightclub
I don’t think I need to tell you why you need to see Dick Dale. Just do it.
Battlehooch, Man In Space, Ghost & The City at Slim’s
Sunday, January 8th
Tower Of Power at Yoshi’s – Oakland
There are a whole lot of amazing bands from the East Bay, so many that people often forget about these guys. Which is a shame, because they are true funk innovators, and this will be an especially amazing set.
Monday, January 9th
The Soft White Sixties, Zane Carney, Big Eagle, Gabriel Kelly, Amy Blashkie at Cafe du Nord
Some bands have names that have nothing to do with what the band actually sounds like. The Soft White Sixties are the exact opposite. They are a blissful garage soul band that sound right out of the 60’s.Put that into the intimate confines of Cafe du Nord, and you have the recipe for a great Monday night.
Tuesday, January 10th
I’m not a fan of these days, but I can’t seem to find anything going on this night… Got any good shows that I need to know about on January 10th? Email me at promo@spinningplatters.com!!
Wednesday, January 11th
Kacey Johansing, Ash Reiter, The Lawlands at Cafe du Nord
Cafe du Nord is one of my favorite venue’s that I rarely make it out to… The good news is that they’ve got two great shows in one week! This local singer songwriter has been honing her craft for a few years, and just keeps getting better.
