Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 12/15/11-12/21/11

Appearing at Rickshaw Stop on Sunday

With the holidays fast approaching most of your favorite venues are getting rented out for holiday parties… But, live music is still happening, and there is plenty going around this week so you can get out of the cold. (Special thanks to Chris Rogers for helping out with some of these this week)

Thursday, December 15th

Dinosaur Jr, Henry Rollins, Pierced Arrows at The Fillmore

The groundbreaking, legendary Dinosaur Jr just can’t seem to shake this reunion. It feels like the original lineup of Dinsoaur Jr has been reunited longer than it was together in the beginning, which is kind of a bummer for Sebadoh fans. But, if you are a Dinsoaur Jr fan, this might be the show to go to. Not only do you get to hear their third album, Bug, beginning to end, but the great Henry Rollins will be interviewing the band live on stage.

Oh Land, Young Digerati at Rickshaw Stop

Friday, December 16th

Hubba Hubba Revue: 5th Annual Chrismanukkah with Meshugga Beach Party, and performances from The Sizzing Sirens, Peekaboo Burlesque, Roxy Shocks, Johnny Angelhorn, Honey Lawless, Gigi D’Flower, Sparkly Devil, Mynx d’Meanor, Miss Balla Fire, Lola Martinet, Tila Von Twirl, Dolls of Doom, Cyanide Cyn, Rizzo Rogue, Bunny Pistol, Alotta Boutte, Miss Honey Penny, Truvy Trollop, Gorilla X, and The Hubba Hubba Go-Go Elves at The DNA Lounge

Hubba Hubba Revue means burlesque and the art of the tease. Also performing are Meshugga Beach Party. Here’s the pitch: gleeful surf rock processed through a faux-Hasidic lens. Hilarity follows. Surf rock and Jewish rhythms go together like latkes and applesauce. You’ll find their schtick just as wholesomely delicious. ‘Tis the season.

Two Gallants, Tim Cohen’s Magic Trick, Fear The Hearts Of Men Are Failing at 924 Gilman St

Saturday, December 17th

Ozomatli, La Santa Cecilia At The Fillmore (9 PM)

Ozokidz at The Fillmore (3 PM)

Ozomatli are one of the greatest live bands in America. I can go on & on about the musical gumbo that is Ozomatli, but, in all actuality, the are just plain fun. There are few bands that elicit spastic dancing more than this amazing band. And on Saturday, they are treating the Bay Area to a matinee show for the kiddies, as well as a grown up show at night.

Lagwagon, Druglords of the Avenues, Heartsounds at Slim’s

Lagwagon. Yes. Good-natured overachieving melodic punk rock with one really tall guitar player and a tiny singer. Friendlier and more welcoming than a better-than-expected house party when you’re 22.

If punk rock from the Nineties were the 2010 San Francisco Giants, Lagwagon would be second baseman Freddy Sanchez:
upbeat, friendly without being cloying, and consistently overlooked ’cause some other people happen to be flashier.

Sunday, December 18th

Victims Family with Jello Biafra, Ty Segall, Adam Savage at Rickshaw Stop

First of all, any chance to hear Jello Biafra sing live is an evening to treasure. Add in local singer songwriter Ty Seagall and Adam Savage, most of TV’s Mythbusters and one of the funniest men alive, and you’ve got a solid night out. Even better? It’s a benefit for Rock Project SF, a school designed to get kids playing music.

Jim Campilongo Trio at Yoshi’s – SF

Monday, December 19th

The Naked and Famous, White Arrows at The Independent

These synth wielding Aussies have had one crazy, crazy year… They came from virtual nowhere to selling out venues all across the country. This is their third Bay Area show this month, so if you miss this one, well, you are simply foolish.

Natasha Miller at Yoshi’s – SF

Tuesday, December 20th

Brian McKnight at Yoshi’s – SF

Remember dancing to this song at your middle school dance? Wasn’t that awesome?

Extra Classic, Ready Steady, Sparrow’s Gate at Brick & Mortar Music Hall

Wednesday, December 21st

Jingle Punx, Brooks Was Here, One After Another, Mad Noise at Uptown Nightclub

I really hate Christmas… It’s just unnecesarily stressful. But, I can appreciate a band doing fun, pop punk songs mocking the holiday. And, it’s free… So, really, no reason to stay home!
