Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 1/20/11-1/26/11

There are a lot of really surprising, and really funny shows within. This is an extra special week of fun silliness, and I think that you should check it out:

Thursday, January 20th

Jonathan Coulton, Paul & Storm at Great American Music Hall

Like DIY Super Nerdy folk music? Especially from a guy that got famous playing video game conferences? Well, have some Coulton. Everyone loves the dude!

Mac Miller, Casey Veggies at Slim’s

Friday, January 21st

Jay Brannan, Dave Smallen, Jhameel at Bottom Of The Hill

Bloggers don’t like to pay for things. Everyone knows that. That’s why we blog. It’s free. Well, at least four Spinning Platters writers are actually paying to go to this show! Jay Brannan has been discussed at great lengths on this site for good reason. He has a beautiful voice, and is also an amazing songwriter. He can also interpret a tune nicely, too:

Ra Ra Riot, Givers at Great American Music Hall

Don’t tell our lead photographer’s girlfriend this, but he kind of has a crush on this band’s cello player. Shhh! It’s a secret. Don’t tell anybody, and really don’t put this on the internet anywhere!

Saturday, January 22nd

An Evening With Asylum Street Spankers at Great American Music Hall

At one point in time, it felt like the roots music troublemakers Asylum Street Spankers would be around forever. Well, that’s simply not the case. This is officially their last bay area show! So, for all of you procrastinators that thought they’d just check them out next time, well there will be no next time.

Old 97’s at The Fillmore

This song is really good.

Sunday, January 23rd

Beep!, Dinosaur Feathers, The Careerers at Hemlock Tavern

Beep! are a really cool electro-jazz band. But they aren’t nearly as cool as Dinosaur Feathers. This video is pretty ridiculous, and should be fun live, too! It’s also only $6. Can’t go wrong there!

Madball, Cruel Hand, Crucified, Boundaries at Thee Parkside

Monday, January 24th

An Evening With War at Yoshi’s

Tuesday, January 25th

The Ghost Of A Saber Toothed Tiger, Laura Gibson at Cafe du Nord

Sean Lennon, son of Yoko & John, has had a pretty inconsistent career as a solo musician, but this project with his girlfriend, supermodel Charlotte Kemp Muhl is his most musical adventurous project, as well has his finest, yet! The live show is excellent, and don’t miss this chance to see this project play such an intimate spot!

Sonya Cotton, Honeycomb, Ever Isles at Rickshaw Stop

Clip’d Beaks, Future Twin, Lanturn at Amnesia

Wednesday, January 26th

BLOWFLY at Yoshi’s

Who is Blowfly? He’s the 71 year old hip-hop pioneer that perfected the art of full-on raunch. He is still making music, and still staying ridiculously raunchy. And, if sex = long life, this guy’s gonna be around for another 20 years.

Black Thought (Of The Roots), Lunar Heights at The New Parish

Or, The Whale, Poor Bailey, Cash Pony at Uptown Nightclub
