Sure, it’s not The Sex Pistols. However, Johnny Rotten’s post-Pistols New Wave project may not have the historical gravitas of his first band, one could argue that this band was sonically more progressive than their punk counterpart.

It is impossible to be unhappy while watching or listening to Matt & Kim. This band is the sonic equivalent of pure joy. Be prepared to dance recklessly.

Cadence Weapon are a hip hop duo from Canada. You know, that country that breeds nothing but hip hop? Well, they aren’t your normal rap group, as they have most recently toured with such art rock luminaries as Japandroids and Liars. They do something a bit darker and more claustrophobic than you the current scene, which might be why the rock world has embraced them so. Tonight they are playing with Dirty Ghosts- a phenomenal garage rock combo that killed a couple weeks ago at Treasure Island.

Sophie Barker at Yoshi’s – San Francisco
I will say this once: Sophie Barker sang the best songs in Zero 7. She is playing Yoshi’s, which is one of the finest venues in the bay, and probably the best place to experience this sexy, soulful voice.

R Kelly, Tamia at The Paramount Theater
Halloween with R Kelly? This is a dream come true! The king of the dirty soul song is making a rare theater appearance in downtown Oakland, and, believe me- this show will be amazing. Make note: anyone you see on November 1st on public transit, still in their Halloween costume? They went to this show. And, yes, they had a very good night. (Also: if anyone is into cyber stalking, you can find where I’m sitting at this show on Ticketmaster using that creepy thing where you can tag where you are on the seating chart)
