Gundlach Bundschu Winery is probably the single most beautiful and intimate place to see a show in the bay area. The outdoor amphitheater is located on the top of a hill, overlooking all of beautiful Sonoma. And, of course, tonight you will experience the pure joy of listening to one of the greatest songwriters to emerge in the last 20 years, Ms Jenny Lewis. Sure, it’s a bit of a drive from most of the Bay Area, but you’ve worked hard and deserve to leave work early. Those TPS reports can wait until Thursday…

I can easily get behind a good 90’s punk rock nostalgia show. Anyone that owned any Nitro or Fat Wreck Chords compilation (you remember- they were always like $6.00 and had like 30 songs on them) remembers the melodic and bratty hardcore of Jughead’s Revenge. So lace up your 80 eyelet vegan Doc clones (because the real ones use leather, and that just isn’t cool), pour some Kool Aid in your hair, drink a liter of Jolt and get in the pit!

Bridge School Benefit Concert at Shoreline Amphitheater
Every year, Neil Young puts together a really amazing bill to benefit this school for developmentally disabled kids. This year, however, pretty much owns most years. Playing both nights is the amazing Jenny Lewis, jazz chanteuse Diana Krall, living legend Elvis Costello, classic rock groundbreakers Heart, 2nd best album of 2012 award winners fun., rock radio mainstays Queens Of The Stone Age, soul/folk hybrid My Morning Jacket, and a reunited Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. That would be a solid line up for a show. Of course, Mr Young had to throw in a few single day curveballs. On Saturday, we have a very special appearance by Jack Johnson, plus the first ticketed live performance from Arcade Fire in support of their new record Reflektor. Exciting? Yes. Even more exciting? Sunday only brings us one special guest. But his name is Tom Waits. One of the greatest performers of all time, who has also become a bit of a recluse in the live performance world for the last 20 years or so.

J. Cole, Wale at The Warfield
J. Cole slid out of from under the radar in 2013. He kept a tidy cult of fans happy throughout 2010, playing small rooms while putting on one of the best live hip hop shows around. Now people are starting to pay attention. His latest record, Born Sinner, is the best hip hop record of 2013. (Sorry, Yeazus.) Not only is he doing high quality stuff, but audiences are taking notice. He sold out a show at The Warfield on October 27th in like 30 seconds flat. This 2nd show isn’t quite there yet, but don’t sleep on tickets. This one will sell out, too. And you don’t want to miss J Cole before he’s selling out arenas.

Foy Vance, Ram’s Pocket Radio at The Independent
Probably the finest songwriter to come out of Ireland since Glen Hansard melted all of our hearts, Foy Vance is definitely on his way to melting our hearts, too! He is a fine troubadour, playing wonderful songs that are great for singing along with. He’s going to put on a fantastic show, and I highly recommend this evening.

Save Ferris, The Interrupters, Jokes For Feelings at The Regency Ballroom
Yes, we all know that it’s not actually a Save Ferris show, but Monique Powell, vocalist for Save Ferris, and a group of hired hands. However, it’s still the music of Save Ferris and Powell is one of the finest singers in the business. Plus, this is her first time playing San Francisco since the time Bottom Of The Hill caught fire during her set, so it’s really exciting to have her back, and hopefully she’s not jixed.
