Treasure Island Weekend is upon us… And, if you still have the energy, here’s a few more shows to go to, as well!
Thursday, October 14th
Fishbone, Everything Must Go, Lord Family Players at DNA Lounge
There are a lot of shows that you would like to see this night, but you need to be at this one. Fishbone are, by far, one of the greatest live acts to ever grace the American musical stage. They are pure energy and musicality, and after 20+ years in the biz, they’ve got the live show down pat. They also don’t headline around here much, as they seem to got shoved onto support slots alot in the bay, so don’t miss this rare chance to get a full fledged Fishbone show!
Dan Black, Butterfly Bones, DJ Morale at The Independent
Gogol Bordello, Forro In The Dark at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Friday, October 15th
Die Antwoord, Vin Sol at The Independent
Yes, their show at the Independent sold out in seconds. They are playing two more times this weekend, though. At Ameoba at 6 PM, and then the next afternoon at Treasure Island. So you will enjoy much South African glitch hop wackiness!
Matt Costa, Threes and Nines at Slim’s
Birds & Batteries, Geographer, The Holy Roman Empire at Bottom Of The Hill
Indian Jewelry, Clipd Beaks, Late Young at Hemlock Tavern
Saturday October 16th & Sunday October 17th
Treasure Island Music Festival
Simply the best outdoor music festival in America. Perfect size, perfect set lengths, no overlap, no walking 20 miles between stages, there is nothing bad about this festival. The weather is always perfect in October, the views are stunning, the line up is interesting but not alienating. Noise Pop & Another Planet have created something so good that I will buy a ticket every year without even hearing a line up.
Please read our guide to the festival.
Saturday, October 16th
Scream, Oppressed Logic, Toys That Kill, Grace Alley, Zero Progress at 924 Gilman St
Sorry, I don’t think Dave Grohl is playing Gilman, but the rest of this classic DC hardcore band is. If you still need to mosh after LCD Soundsystem, them this is your place to go!
Sunday, October 17th
Batusis, The Re-Volts, Bite at Thee Parkside
Syl Sylvain (New York Dolls) and Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys/Rocket From The Tomb) have created an old school punk super group. Could be good. Could be awful. We’ll see, won’t we?
Monday, October 18th
Interpol, White Rabbits at The Fox Theater – Oakland
At one point in time, I believed that Interpol were a boring Joy Division cover band. As they’ve grown as musicians, they’ve evolved into something much more interesting, incorporating a wide variety of influences, and, at rare moments, actually singing about happiness!
This isn’t one of those songs, but I do like this one:
David Bazan, Wye Oak at The Independent
Tuesday, October 19th
Jonsi, Mountain Men at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Forget everything you know about Sigur Ros. Jonsi’s solo work, although layered and complex like his former band, has about 20 times the energy. This will be a super fun rock show, and one not to be missed!
Minus The Bear, Tim Kasher and The Globes at Regency Ballroom
Wednesday, October 20th
The Vaselines, Dum Dum Girls at Great American Music Hall
Talk about a killer double bill! One of Kurt Cobain’s all time favorite bands making a rare public appearance, in support of a superb new record, and providing support it is the amazing, reverb heavy, punkish Dum Dum Girls.
Mumford & Sons, Mt Desolation & King Charles at The Warfield
Suicidal Tendencies, Hed (PE) at The Fillmore
