Spinning Platters Recommends: Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band, January 19/20 at the Fillmore

Show date: January 19/20, 2018, 7:00 pm

Venue: The Fillmore

City: San Francisco

Description:

Josh Ritter crafts little vignettes in each of his songs. Never precious, he draws his influences from the breadth of American folk, rock, and vintage country; he spins yards of stories with illustrative lyrics that give life to dreams and kick with vibrancy, owing to his dynamic Royal City Band. He tends to play the crooner against his band’s vibrant sound across horns, keys, bass  and guitars, and that balance makes for a dynamic exchange of sounds and energies. Twenty years after his debut album, his musicality has broadened, his depth of songwriting has matured, and he’s become an engaging and lively performer with an outstanding backup band. I’ve seen him four times, and he both delights and moves me every time.

A nine piece lively band with a jazzy, bluesy, swingy sound; the harmonies and orchestration are sharp and punchy. They’re sure to be a treat.
