Spinning Platters Picks Some Noise Pop 2010 Shows

This one man will begin a great week of music

It’s here! Noise Pop 2010 starts today with two excellent shows, and your first opportunity to show-hop. Start at Bender’s Bar for the happy  hour with Har Mar Superstar, and then cross the bridge (or better yet, take BART) to the Fox Oakland to see Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band. Many of your favorite Spinning Platters writers will be there. But then what? You’ve got a whole week of shows, and you’re not sure what to see?

How did we decide? It was simple. If one of our writers requested to cover a show, we’ve included it. Where is our staff hoping to see all of you? Read on to find out.

Wednesday, February 24

Rogue Wave with Princeton, Man/Miracle, Two Sheds at Bottom of the Hill

Rogue Wave’s got a new album coming out next week, so expect to hear those songs tonight. Bring your clapping hands because there’s lots of clapping on Permalight. Princeton and Man/Miracle are both excellent, so show up early. Plus, it’s “sold out” so get there early to get any leftover tickets.

Foreign Born and The Fresh & Onlys with Free Energy, The Splinters at Rickshaw Stop

The Ghost of a Saber Toothed Tiger with If By Yes, Consortium Musicum, DJ Eucademix at The Indepdendent

Thursday, February 25

Zee Avi with The Hot Toddies, Leslie and the Badgers, Tiny Television at Rickshaw Stop

She’s a bit like Norah Jones with a guitar, but her lyrics are a bit more serious than that. You won’t find serious lyrics with support act The Hot Toddies, but Spinning Platters loves them, so make sure to see all the bands.

Citay and Scout Niblett with Greg Ashley, Tape Deck Mountain at Cafe Du Nord

Friday, February 26

Wallpaper and The Limousines with Butterfly Bones, Battlehooch at Slim’s

This show is going to be one big giant dance party. Drink up whatever you drink, or take whatever you take, and hit the dance floor. If you’re not gonna dance, please try a different show. In fact, choosing one show tonight was tough, and I almost ended up choosing …

Scissors For Lefty and Judgement Day with Ghost and the City, Glaciers

The last time I saw Scissors For Lefty, I got blitzed and danced up a storm. I think they were good; I don’t completely remember. Judgement Day is always awesome to watch, and they’re the reason to come out to Bottom of the Hill tonight. They promise something special for this show, but aren’t saying what. When you find out, please tweet it at me. (@SpinnPlatt)

Atlas Sound with Geographer, Magic Wands, Nice Nice at Great American Music Hall

The Mumlers with The Growlers, Sonny and the Sunsets, The Ferocious Few at Cafe Du Nord

Four Tet with Nathan Fake, Rainbow Arabia, Newvillager at The Indepdent

Saturday, February 27

Industry Noise at Swedish American Hall

This is a day event, and is $90. If it were not $90, I’d be going. It’s a bunch of talking and discussion about the music industry, and how to make it. If you have the money, it’s worth it. If you don’t, but want to discuss the music industry, I’ll meet you at a coffee shop. I’ll buy the drinks; you buy the pastry.

We Were Promised Jetpacks with The Lonely Forest, Bear Hands, Tempo No Tempo at Slim’s

Pouria loves this band.

!!! with Maus Haus, Sugar & Gold, My First Earthquake at Mezzanine

Didn’t dance enough last night? Be sure to come to the Mezzanine tonight. !!! always brings the party, but they’re going to need your help. From the lead singer of this band, I learned to dance with my hands in a crowd because the band can’t see your feet. Do good by them and get your hands up right away!

Mark Kozelek with Laura Gibson, Paula Frazer, Fences at Great American Music Hall

Thao Nguyen and Mirah with Horse Feathers, Dave Smallen, Carletta Sue Kay at Swedish American Hall

Magnetic Fields with Mark Eitzel at The Fox Oakland

Unusual Heroes: John Darnielle and Lou Barlow (film) at ATA

Sunday, February 28

Dizzy Balloon with The Hounds Below, Visqueen, Laarks at Bottom of the Hill

This is the Sunday afternoon show this year, an ongoing Noise Pop tradition that probably used to have free BBQ, an old Bottom of the Hill tradition that went away before I moved here, or at least before I heard about it. Maybe someone will cook some stuff and hand it out for free outside. If not, there’s always Visqueen, one of the best live acts out there. Just be nicer to Ben than the band is.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes with The Watson Twins, AB & the Sea, The Northern Key at Bimbo’s 365 Club

This one will definitely have tickets at the door, so get here early and watch some openers. Opening acts are the lifeblood of Noise Pop, and AB & the Sea are going to get yours pumping. Just don’t think about Ima Robot when you watch Edward Sharpe or else you might get confused. When they do that song “Home,” you’re gonna be happy you’re here.

A Sneak Preview of a Film About Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields at Mezzanine

Word is that Stephin Merritt will be doing Q&A after this movie, so try not to miss that. Also, earlier today he’ll be at Amoeba in SF spinning records and signing.

Monday, March 1

The Magnetic Fields with Mark Eitzel at Herbst Theater

Forgot to see them on Saturday night in Oakland?  By now, you’d have read the review on Spinning Platters and are depressed you missed out. Try Craigslist for tickets; this one is sold out, and Herbst isn’t great about releasing last minute tickets. It’s worth trying, though. This is a great venue for this band.

Tickets for all shows are available through Ticketfly. Most shows listed as sold out will have tickets available for purchase at the door.

There’s much more than this, even. See the entire Noise Pop schedule here.
