Show Review: Motley Crue & Def Leppard & Poison, Oracle Park, 09/07/2022

So, what is there really to do in retirement? Move to an over-55 community in Florida and play golf, shuffleboard, and pickleball until death?  KISS has been retired since their Farewell Tour in 2001, right? Wrong!  Ozzy Osbourne‘s No More Tours farewell tour was 30 years ago, yet he just put out another new record! Eagles, Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac, and many other legacy classic rock bands never even bothered to retire and just keep going with the same hit song setlists.  For all those mere mortals who are not lifelong rock stars, retirement might be something to look forward to after working a desk job or whatever for 40 years, but for Vince Neil (61), Mick Mars (71), Nikki Sixx (63), and Tommy Lee (59) of Mötley Crüe, their retirement in 2015 was definitely not the right choice.

Mötley Crüe’s first tour since then was actually announced nearly 3 years ago and was supposed to happen in 2020… and then 2021… and now in 2022, with Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Stadium Tour finally happened!  What better way to say We’re Back than to jump straight into stadiums as if there was never a cessation of touring agreement that they signed in January 2014…

Show Review: Descendents, The Circle Jerks, Fake Fruit at The UC Theatre, 8/26/22

In my humble opinion, The Decline of Western Civilization is the greatest film ever made about youth counter-culture movements. Director Penelope Spheeris later directed Wayne’s World, another impressive depiction of youth culture that captured the much-maligned and misunderstood 80’s LA punk scene. The NYC and UK scenes were the “important” scenes. LA was overly aggressive and lacked artistic credibility in the eyes of music critics. Show Review: The Killers with Johnny Marr at Chase Center, San Francisco, 8/23/2022

Recently I had the pleasure of attending a music festival in Spain where The Killers were one of the headliners. Top-billed along with Metallica, Muse, Florence & the Machine, and Jack White, they were by far the highlight of the 5-day affair, their set becoming a joyous singalong among tens of thousands of fans. I’ll admit to being a bit concerned about the contrasting fanbases. Is Chase Center even able to become the joyous sing-along venue? Single Of The Week: “Tres Hermanos” by Hermanos Gutierrez (featuring Dan Auerbach)

This one is specifically for my fellow Latinxes whose parents were born in the 50’s and made sure that the music of Santo & Johnny was always in rotation at home. I forgot how much my soul needed some lazy Sunday morning, reverb drenched guitar instrumentals. Enter Hermanos Gutierrez! This track, produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, is the exact soundtrack for making pancakes and staying in your pajamas until 2pm. 

“Tres Hermanos” is the lead single off their upcoming full-length El Buen y El Malo. It’s coming your way on October 28th, the day after my birthday, and you can preorder/presave here! 

Show Review: Stern Grove Festival – Taj Malah and Monophonics -A Legend is Present

Taj Malah concerts are legendary and, for me, a soulful, personal connection to self. The anticipation for this concert was huge, as he has many Grammys, a large following, and relatable lyrics. Preparation was beyond the normal process of selecting a close location to the stage and gathering friends and snacks. It was a trip and opportunity to recharge life with positive wonders yet to be seen. This audience was tight – a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd. Outside Lands 2022: 20 Instant Gig Reviews

My last Outside Lands was in 2019. I’ve gone nearly every year up until that point, only missing the third year. I had tickets for 2021. Lizzo, The Strokes, and Hinds are all on my “never miss” list, but by October, Delta was rearing its ugly head, and I just couldn’t do it. This year, I was still on the fence until the week beforehand. With BA.5, the virus has become more contagious, and outdoor transmission is more prevalent. However, with wastewater tracking showing a downward trend, toddler vaccines FINALLY seeing the light of day, and studies seem to indicate that N95s and a good breeze are still very effective at thwarting the virus, I decided to give it a go. I packed like ten masks, two packs of antibacterial wipes (which made me the most popular guy at the festival at times. One woman actually proposed marriage when I gave her the end of one of my packs!), an empty water bottle, and several layers of clothing, and decided to make a solid go of it.  Continue reading “Outside Lands 2022: 20 Instant Gig Reviews”

Old Crow Medicine Show with Molly Tuttle: A Definition of HOME

When listening to Molly Tuttle and the Golden Highway, your entire person will elevate to a higher positivity.  The upbeat, quick rhythms with elated smiles between the band and the audience were contagious.  During a few short pauses of confession and conversation, she referenced San Francisco as her home.  Upon each return, she witnessed the changes and felt the nostalgia for the original San Francisco and California Dream.  This is the origin of the “San Francisco Blues.”  Of the entire set, my personal favorite was “Crooked Tree” with the stand-out lyrics “who am I to wish I wasn’t the way I am.”  All of the songs appeared to resonate with a strong positivity encouraging self-appreciation and acceptance. Show Review: Emo to Dance Rock – Cold War Kids and Geographer Wake Up the Sleepy West Side of San Francisco at Stern Grove Music Festival

Every show at the Stern Grove vibes differently…   Thus, I was unsure if there would be much of a crowd when my entry was quick, simple, and easy.  I was wrong.   The entire venue was fully populated with smiling faces and loaded party blankets from stage to hilltop.   The crowd had a harmonious, happy vibe completely prepped for an afternoon of indie ROCK.   Honoring the local musicians, Geographer and Cold War Kids returned to their San Francisco origin.   DJ Hgmny set the tone with chill moody blues as people settled in. Show Review: Cavalera Conspiracy “Beneath / Arise”, Great American Music Hall, 06/17/2022

It seems like every band these days is doing anniversary and album anniversary tours.  Maybe the band has been around 10, 25, 50 years?  Maybe their most popular album has been around long enough for their fans (or the music press in general) to consider it a classic record?  Most generally wait for a milestone year, 10 at least, before doing it, and it always seems to be on the 5- or 10- year increment.  

Max and Iggor Cavalera founded Sepultura in 1984. The 40th anniversary of that band is coming up in 2024, although both have not been in it since 1996 and 2006, respectively (only the bass player is a near-original member). The Cavalera’s may not be able to tour using the name Sepultura, but they can still celebrate the early albums that they took part in writing and recording.  Despite the odd number of years since they were released (33 and 31 years), Cavalera Conspiracy decided to go against the grain and tour exclusively on these two albums!
