Generation Y’s favorite frat party band, Bowling for Soup, visited San Francisco. Because it’s 2011, that means a crowd of recently divorced dads with their preteen sons. And Bowling for Soup was fully prepared for that.

Sketchfest Review: Will Durst and Killing My Lobster at the Eureka Theatre, 1/27/2011
The Eureka Theatre was much better than Eureeka’s Castle last night, thanks to Will Durst, who you might recognize from some radio PSAs he has done over the years, or more accurately, you may know him as a political standup comic. “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” 25th Anniversary Tribute at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, 20 January 2011
It’s the Garry Shandling’s Show 25th Anniversary Tribute review. This is the part where the review talks about what happened at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. And here’s the part where I start typing. Continue reading ““It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” 25th Anniversary Tribute at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, 20 January 2011″
Show Review: You Say Party! We Say Die!, Fake Your Own Death and Nylon Heart Attack at Bottom of the Hill, 3/12/10
Rock ‘n’ roll is defined as getting off work at 9, going to Bottom of the Hill at 10, leaving at 1, getting home at 2 and going back to work again at 7. But two things are in my favor: It’s a slow news day, and Sim Dynasty is down, so I have no distractions and can tell you all about the show I saw last night. Noise Pop Show Review: Zee Avi, The Hot Toddies, Leslie & the Badgers, Tiny Television at The Rickshaw Stop 2/25/10
It was a revisit to the scene of the crime, a reunion with my new favorite band, and an attempt to pay attention after a double mocha and six donuts from All Star Donuts, the only place at 9 p.m. that’s still open in Hayes Valley when you need to work.
I’d been to a Rickshaw Stop show a few times before, most recently while raising the ire of the bouncer because, God forbid, I walked outside with a cup of water. Continue reading “Noise Pop Show Review: Zee Avi, The Hot Toddies, Leslie & the Badgers, Tiny Television at The Rickshaw Stop 2/25/10”
Album Review: You Say Party! We Say Die! — XXXX
I’ve never understood why “garden variety” is viewed by many as a pejorative. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to appreciate broccoli. Just ask Steve Masters.
You Say Party! We Say Die! doesn’t offer much in the originality department outside of the double factorial, but that’s fine. We need more bands like this. Let’s start at the end with “Heart of Gold.” It does belong at the end, because it has a “Road Movie to Berlin” feel to it, but musically it reminds me of The Cure’s “Untitled,” and the singing is straight out of a Marine Research-style track. The rest of the album copies other styles, but no other band manages to homogenize this many sounds together. Continue reading “Album Review: You Say Party! We Say Die! — XXXX”
Show Review: The Downer Party, The Hot Toddies, Tempo No Tempo and Fighting the Villain at Bottom of the Hill, 2/3/10
Winter Music Fest. It’s a thing, and it’s happening right now. If Noise Pop is the Oscars, then perhaps Winter Music Fest is the Golden Globes. Last night four bands of varying talent took turns taking the stage at Bottom of the Hill, and the result was a cornucopia of cacophony. Sure. Show Review: Hunx and His Punx, Brilliant Colors and Gun Outfit at Hemlock Tavern, 1/3/10
I was such a good little soldier. I took notes on my cell phone, but I was so cheap that I didn’t email them to myself because my data plan is a bit limited, and not in a good way like the 38L is. I figured I would just read them when I got into work the next day. But then the battery died. So my phone is at home, charging and watching Drew Carey butcher The Price Is Right. Good thing Brilliant Colors played, because I don’t need notes to talk about them and their heavenly sound. (Did you see what I did there?)
Album Review: Brilliant Colors – Introducing
Ten tracks. Less than 23 minutes. Three women. Oh, it’s that kind of album. Actually, not so much. This band got tired of waiting for Heavenly/Marine Research/Talulah Gosh to get back together (fundamentally impossible, I know — the new Tender Trap will be out soon, so hang in there) and decided to make their own music. Then, they’d get about two minutes into a song and realize, “Wow, this is harder than we thought. On to the next track!” Continue reading “Album Review: Brilliant Colors – Introducing”
Show Review: Mika Miko, Judgement Day, Audacity, Mammoth Exploration Society at Nickel City, 7/27/09
It’s not every day that I get a new favorite band, and that’s a good thing. I already own 160 T-shirts and four tote bags. I don’t need any more. But yesterday I did get a new favorite band, and it caused me to watch an entire set, something that never happens at Nickel City, where the siren song of Beatmania, World Stadium ’92 and Puzzle Fighter are too strong to ignore.
