10 Quick Questions with I the Mighty

I the Mighty are a fairly new band, having developed out of a two-man acoustic project called Breakpoint.  Now signed to Bay Area indie label Talking House Records, we caught up with them as they prepared to play what they expect to be their biggest show yet, this Friday night the 21st at Blake’s on Telegraph in Berkeley.  I the Mighty are:

Brent Walsh – vocals/guitar/piano
Ian Pedigo – guitar/vocals
Chris Hinkley – bass/vocals
Blake Dahlinger – drums/percussion

Spinning Platters: You’re a fairly new band. How are you describing yourself to others?

Blake: We’re sort of a singer/songwriter style band but bigger and louder. We like epic sounding stuff, haha.

SP: How did you get from Breakpoint (the acoustic duo) to the full band, I the Mighty?

Ian: Well basically another band already owned the name. When we found this out we were all excited for a name change. We had been looking for an excuse to change the name so it came at a perfect time when we added Blake and Chris to the unit, signed to a new label, and began recording our first album. It feels like a fresh start and a new band.

SP: How does expanding the band affect the songwriting process?

All: That’s sort of hard to say at this point. Most all of the songs on our record are ones Brent and Ian have been playing for some time. Chris and Blake wrote their parts to the existing songs once they joined up. Brent could probably best answer this question, but he’s recording his last bit of vocals for the record right now.

SP: What’s the deal with the beards?

Blake: lol, One night we decided we’d make a pact and keep growing either our hair or facial hair till we finished the recording of the album. Brent and Ian are growing out their hair, and Chris and I are growing out our beards. Brent and Ian have wonderful hair and it smells amazing. Chris has the most rad side burns you’ve ever seen.

SP: Tell us about your best gig.

Ian: I don’t think we’ve played a show that could be considered our best gig yet. But the best scenario for a best gig would be with bands that we like and with people that are into our music. I have feeling that this Friday at Blake’s on Telegraph in Berkeley will be a contender for our best gig ever. So put your fun caps on and be there!

SP: Who are you listening to now that you’d like everyone to know about?

Blake: We all listen to a lot of different music from one another. Ian’s into Dave Smallen, Manchester Orchestra, and Elliot Smith. Brent’s been listening to the new stuff from The Mars Volta and Dave Matthews Band. Chris loves the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love Armor For Sleep, Saosin, and The Used. We’re all huge fans of a band from the East Bay called Via Coma. They’re an amazing band and great dudes!

SP: What are your favorite guilty pleasures?

Ian: I cant speak for every one but Brent and I have been know to get down on beer pong when we have time off. Chris loves cake. Blake loves Chris.

SP: What’s going to be the biggest revelation on your Wikipedia page?

Ian: I would hope it says something like best song in the world, plays to thousands, handsome looking band, but I have a feeling it’s going to say something like “most vocal harmonies in one song”…Brent gets down like Freddie Mercury.

SP: What’s coming next for I the Mighty?

Blake: Touring, which we’re totally stoked about! Once we finish our record we hope to be out on the road as much as possible!

SP: Now, sell our readers on your live show.

Ian: Our music will make you cum in your ear pussies.

  1. I think I was sold more before the answer to the “sell our readers on your live show” question.

And I really need to know puppies or kittens!?!
