Featuring three possible fathers and a collection of ABBA hits, Mamma Mia! tells the story of mother-daughter Donna and Sophie as they navigate love, loss, and self-discovery. Widely staged throughout the world, SJSC’s production brings a level of intimacy to the story. Due to the space and set design (Michael Palumbo), the show feels a bit like the movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried where the focus becomes less about theatrics and more on the interactions between cast members. Songs include big hits such as Dancing Queen, Voulez-Vous, Lay All Your Love on Me, and the musical’s namesake, Mamma Mia.

Adrienne Herro plays Donna, and Allison J. Parker plays her daughter Sophie. The chemistry is believable between the mother-daughter, but there’s always a bit of something missing. It’s a recurring issue throughout the production, as several actors seem to be very aware that they are in a musical— cue jazz hands. It’s incredibly difficult to coach a level of camp appropriate for this type of musical without losing authenticity, so it’s understandable.

Two actors who really shine are Allison Rich and Jill Miller, playing Tanya and Rosie, respectively. They bring heightened stakes to their roles while remaining incredibly truthful. Their rapport is unmatched, and their scenes are such fun. Tanya and Rosie bring the summer to this remote Greek island that’s supposed to be perpetually in vacation mode anyway. Donna is a hotelier after all, with a rock ‘n’ roll past. She’s a single mother and fiercely independent, making her progressive for her times, and giving us a glimpse at how far women have come since this musical first hit the stage.

Overall, the production is very well done. Pacing is quick, and keeps you intrigued; like a case of whodunit, we await to hear the results of the metaphorical paternity test. Closing numbers have audiences up on their feet, and in general the show is highly interactive and super engaging. The theater is located conveniently in downtown San Jose, and could make for a fun matinee for all ages. The show is a classic, and the venue provides a great opportunity to catch the show.
