October is nearly here. Match pre-Halloween candy sales with some concert-going and that’s a recipe for general happiness.
Here’s what’s coming up this week.
Thursday, September 26th
Depeche Mode, Crystal Castles at The Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View
Depeche Mode were formed in 1980, released their classic LP Violator in 1990 and — despite the best efforts of KMFDM (LOL) — are still touring to this day. The fact that they’re still touring (and alive) and still Shoreline-sized is testament to the power of good pop songs. Also, these guys have bought, sold, and broken more synthesizers than Trent Reznor. Also, 1990 is calling on the phone for Julian Assange and would like its hair back, thanks.
Friday, September 27th
Angelo Moore & The Brand New Step, Boots Riley, A Million Billion Dying Suns, Rondo Brothers, Vau de Vire Society at the Brick and Mortar, San Francisco
Fishbone‘s frontguy Angelo Moore is releasing a new album this week. Expect jaunty songs full of high-steppin’ and saxophone.
Saturday, September 28th
Teenage Bottlerocket, The Queers, The Copyrights at Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco
Both Teenage Bottlerocket and The Queers are bands that play catchy fast-paced punkrock and are well over a decade old. You’re gettin’ old too.
Sunday, September 29th
Furthur at the Greek Theater, Berkeley (September 27, September 28, September 29)
Hippies.
Monday, September 30th
Frightened Rabbit at The Warfield, San Francisco
Much like Iron And Wine and The National, Frightened Rabbit will make you question all sorts of things with their gently bleached-by-the-sun indie-rock-ish rock. They sound like the scent of chlorine left in a swimsuit two days after the fact: a little pungent, yet reminding you of other times that’ve passed.
Tuesday, October 1st
Man Man at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco (October 1, October 2)
Any band that claims that their genre might be “doom-wop” has a very good chance of being OK by me.
NEXT WEEK: The Evens! Dave Attell! Conor Oberst! And three nights of Thee Oh Sees!
