Spinning Platters Podcast Episode 14 – Too Much Jersey Shore

Jay Reatard, 1980-2010

On episode 14 of the Spinning Platters podcast, we welcome Gary Baker of Universal Music Group for a discussion of his work, including an in-depth discussion about the continued place of major labels in today’s music. We also talk about some upcoming music and shows, and we talk way too much about the Jersey Shore.

You’ll also notice that we discuss Jay Reatard as “what Gary’s been listening to,” and you should know we recorded this the day before he passed away. This episode is dedicated to his memory.

1. Dakin’s been listening to “We Don’t Pump Our Gas, We Pump Our Fists”

2. Gary’s been listening to Jay Reatard

3. Gordon’s been listening to Hockey

4. We discuss Universal Music and major labels in general, includes Alkaline Trio, Paper Tongues, White Denim and Dan Black

5. Song of the week from Dame Judi Dench

  1. Isn’t that a first for SP — a conversation with a bona fide Industry Insider ™? Congrats!

Sad news about Jay Reatard, sorry to hear it. Now I can only get acquainted with his work posthumously.

  2. Amy, one of the developers behind Sonicliving I think counts as an industry insider… But this is the first record label person that we’ve had on.

  3. Listening to this right now and I completely agree with DP about the Green Day thing, it still amazes me that they are that big because to me they are still a “local band”.
