I’m not that much of a Grinch when it comes to Christmas, I’m actually a bit of a nerd and enjoy it quite a bit, but even all the Christmas songs start to drive me crazy after a while. So here are my six songs I think it’s ok to like, or that won’t drive you crazy (I hope). Feel free to leave your favorite non-annoying Christmas song suggestions in the comments.
1. David Bowie & Bing Crosby – Little Drummer Boy
This song isn’t so much a classic as a classic squared. The joke at the beginning being that David Bowie doesn’t know that it’s Bing Crosby, and now this same scenario can be remade with a current artist not knowing who Bowie is. I also have a soft spot for the Little Drummer Boy since that is my mother’s favorite Christmas song.
2. The Waitresses-Christmas Wrapping
A peppy Christmas song which is not so much about the holiday but just about life in general that can occur during this time. Plus I enjoy any song that can sing “Bah Humbug” in such a cheery way. Unfortunately no official video was made for this song, so ignore the lights and enjoy the song.
3. Travis – Last Christmas
The Wham! classic which has been covered by way too many people is the Christmas anthem for broken hearted people. The most recent cover was done by the cast of Glee, but I choose the first version that made me think “Hey this song isn’t that bad!” which was by Scottish band Travis mostly because I enjoy their accents and really, what’s Christmas without a drunk Santa?
4. No Doubt – Oi To the World
Some people may prefer the original by The Vandals, but the version I first heard was the No Doubt cover and since I think it’s okay to like No Doubt again, I include it here. Plus they actually had an official video for it but feel free to look for the original version and have a punk Christmas!
5. Blur – The Wassailing Song
This offbeat carol (it’s actually about the New Year) is more well known in England then in the States, but thanks to my Blur fangirl status I include it here. Probably best known among fans even as the song that appears in their tour video Starshapped while the band visits Stonehenge, but how can you not love a Christmas song that includes the lyric “our toast it is white and our ale it is brown”? Enjoy the full song then watch the tour video if you like.
6. Belle & Sebastian – O Little Town of Bethlehem
For your twee Christmas, a jazzy version of a traditional carol as done by Scottish group Belle and Sebastian. Reminds me of A Charlie Brown Christmas without actually being from the special, though frankly I would have included Vince Guaraldi Trio in here if I didn’t think it would annoy some people.
How in the world can a list like this exist with The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
Like I said, add your suggestions. Specific songs though?
That is a specific song LOL

well see there you go, never even heard of it.
I just heard of it on Saturday when it was karaoke-d at a party.
Everyone else was saying it was the best christmas song ever.
The creepy bit with Alex isn’t in that video!
But the Graham “It’s a bit like seeing Morrisey” thing is there, so that’s good. And I forgot how cut Damon in glasses is.
cute i mean. whoops. Damon is not cut, in glasses or otherwise. ha ha.
and here I thought you were using new slang.

I agree with the band, not so much the song…
