I was a bit disappointed with the Suicide Girls Blackheart Burlesque show that took place this past Friday at The Fillmore. Don’t you hate that feeling of eagerly anticipating something, only to be let down? Perhaps my expectations were set too high when I read this preview piece of the 46-show tour in Inked Magazine? Maybe I’ve already been spoiled by shows including performances in Los Angeles’ world-famous Forty Deuce or Las Vegas’ Zumanity (the former focusing a lot more on acrobatics)? Or, I could’ve just been a little bit shellshocked from the beer that ended up in my wig and all over everyone else in the first few rows when someone in front carelessly left a full one on the stage.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Suicide Girls and everything they stand for. Some of my closest friends are alumni and once partook in their features including the infamous calendars. It’s difficult for me to articulate the reasons, but all I can say is that I was underwhelmed. I was expecting something much more elaborate, not to mention sophisticated. The geeky references, including homages to Planet of the Apes and Stormtroopers were amusing enough. At the end of the show, I felt like The Fillmore had transformed into a slightly geekier, more tattooed version of Coyote Ugly.

I agree 100%. I wanted to go to the show at the Fillmore just to critique. I just don’t see any elements of classical burlesque. It should be called cabaret and not burlesque. It just irks me cause there are true burlesque performers who dedicate their lives to the arts and history of burly-q. Then girls like this come along and loosely use to title to gain some sort of recognition. They kill the whole idea of burlesque. It’s the art of the tease. These girls take their clothes off for a living anyways, so how is this intriguing in any way. You know what to expect from them. I like more theatrical and comedic burlesque shows. The dance just like strippers not burlesque performers. Very irritating. I have friends who are/were Suicide Girls, I hope they won’t partake in such a poorly done “burlesque” act. Ha.
