A cute little singing mouse that fancies itself a knight? Based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo, PigPen Theatre’s musical adaptation tells the tale of an ambitious mouse who rises the ranks to save the day. Like all heroes, Despereaux doesn’t let limitations (being a mouse, for one) keep him from his lofty dreams. A slightly offbeat fairy tale of sorts with a 2007 indie music vibe, this tale feels at home on the Berkeley stage as it would if redone by Wes Anderson.
Dorcas Leung is absolutely adorable as Despereaux, the mouse. Yasmeen Sulieman is a suitable Princess Pea. There’s a wonderful chemistry in their scenes. The transition between Despereaux’s human and puppet forms recreates different perspectives. This back and forth is also a bit humorous, reminding the audience that Despereaux is, indeed, a mouse. Often this play falls flat, but the cuteness factor really shines, and the titular character’s charisma carries the tale forward.
The different perspectives serve their purpose as a reminder, but also as a test to show us that the hero truly deserves to have dreams come true. It’s a coming of age story, as the hero’s confidence builds throughout, leading to a wonderfully warm resolution. Jason Sherwood and Donald Holde do a beautiful job with the scenery and lighting, giving the play a warm and very seasonally appropriate glow.
The Tale of Despereaux will be playing now through January 5th at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. For tickets and more information, please visit www.berkeleyrep.org
