The 20th Anniversary of the Berlin & Beyond Film Festival has an amazing lineup, set to entertain audiences from Jan. 14-17 at the Castro Theatre and Jan. 18-20 at the Goethe-Institut — Tickets available here. Until Thursday, we wanted to provide you with some quick highlights to check out as you’re buying tickets:
- Opening night film Who Am I: No System is Safe, a hacker-heist film that draws inspiration from Fight Club, The Usual Suspects, and has no doubt inspired a lot of story elements in the Golden Globe award winning show, Mr. Robot. The young award winning star of Who Am I, Tom Schilling, will be in attendance.
- A Coffee in Berlin, the fantastic charming black & white cinematic character study directed by Jan Ole Gerster and starring Tom Schilling will screen on Saturday, 1/16 at 9:30pm. (Read Carrie Kahn’s full review of A Coffee in Berlin here.)
- There is also a light ‘living in the margins’ theme featured in SFAI student Nicolas Steiner’s sci-fi/doc hybrid Above and Below, Martin Hawie’s black-and-white hustler flick Toro, After Spring Comes Fall and a few others.
- Finally, there’s an excellent silent film/concert combination to close out the portion of the festival at the Castro theatre. Screening will be Berlin, Symphony of a Great City, scored by German trio ALP. The Wim Wenders-produced tango doc Our Last Tango will close out the festival on Jan. 20th at the Goethe-Institut Auditorium.
