Burger Booglaoo 2015: The Best Show Around

Aggy Sonora of Magnetix
Aggy Sonora of Magnetix

When I visited Gonpachi, the restaurant that inspired Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1, I watched as a teenage bus boy, carrying a tub of dirty dishes, tripped on the second floor landing, sending a cascade of water on two well-suited Japanese business men at the bar below. Resulting in a flash and flury of apologies, towels, and more apologies, I waited for something to happen.

In all honesty, I hoped this was the open action sequence to a movie – the bus boy, who would *really* be an bus GIRL would be a high-stakes arms dealer attempting to get far undercover into mob headquarters to take out the mob boss who’d killed her father. Amid the building tension and suspicion, Mr. Mob, realizing his restaurant would now be the scene for said revenge, The 5, 6, 7, 8’s would loudly tear into: “I’m Blue.” Brilliantly choreographed knife and fist fights (imagine Kill Bill meets The Raid) between our starring underdog crime fighter lady and the mob’s henchmen would ensue.  And above the nash of fists, faces, and katana swords and the interlude of “Bomb the Twist”, John Waters would quietly take the open seat next to me:  “Soooo, hmm, yakitori?” he would ask calmly, coyly peeking at me through delighted eyes.

SXSW 2015: Cool? Yeah, Cool

Charles Bradley Shows us How it's Done
Charles Bradley Shows us How it’s Done

Chris Farley is my spirit animal. Not in a tears of a clown kind-of-way, or a Patrick Swayze dance-off kind-of-way. But in the way where I would be the perfect sidekick to Chris in “The Chris Farley Show”. I’d agree with him and all his qualifiers – yes, when Sir Paul McCartney was in the Beatles, that was definitely “cool.” I could have taken the show on the road with Chris, maybe even done some local interviews:

“Remember that time that you played Treasure Island. And it was, like, really cold?”

“Remember that time you brought that guy on stage to rap ‘Protect Yo Neck? Yeah. That was cool”. Continue reading “SXSW 2015: Cool? Yeah, Cool”

“Clint Eastwood” by Gorillaz: My One Song, SXSW Obsession

A smiling Del

As a kid I was shy. Painfully so. I distinctly remember having a friend in pre-school who didn’t talk. It was by choice, not by some lack of ability, that she didn’t say one word. I enjoyed our time together. Complete silence and yet there was a comfortable communication between us.

And so to me, walking into a room of strangers is absolutely terrifying. A faceless crowd of unknowns. Frightening. So, by all transitive properties a visit to SXSW should be awful, right?

Show Review: Cults at The Fillmore, 11/13/13

Stuck in a Cults-like Trance

Give me the big show. When it comes to a live musical performance, I always want the big show. The greeting. The city salutation. The witty banter. Comments on the venue. The running dialogue. The background on what the song is about. The “we were in L.A. last night and the crowd here tonight is definitely louder than last night” bit. The impromptu jump into the crowd OR the planned jump on to stage-set speakers. The call and response. The encouragement also known as “feel free to sing this song with us if you know the words!” I call it: the big show.

Now, the big show doesn’t have to be all those things. The big show can be subtle, humble, and true to the band. It should serve as a way for the audience to connect to the music through the performers. The big show doesn’t always have to include fancy pyrotechnics or multiple confetti guns, lest you think I bring a Flaming Lips-only / Wayne Coyne-and-thousands of red balloons-on Halloween bias to the table. What I always like about a live performance is the fact that it’s unique. There is something to be said for raw talent but I also believe there is something to be said for engaging a crowd when it comes to a live performance. I believe the big show should match the band and should get the audience closer to the music and to the performers.

Let’s Not Make This Awkward: A Survey of Dave Chappelle and Bill Cosby

billcosby

I laid there comfortably. I was coming off of some great painkillers thanks to a little minor surgery and moving had become a bother. It was beautiful outside but I had settled into a 6-hour marathon of ‘The Cosby Show’. It was one of my favorite episodes where Claire Huxtable tries to lose weight to fit into a dress as Debbie Allen played her no-nonsense trainer. The episodes fluctuated between seasons: from Rudy young to Rudy pre-teen from Lisa Bonet’s short ‘do to her long, flowing, dread-full (see what I did there) locks. I even experienced a little ‘jump-the-shark’ Olivia. I was enthralled. The episodes were funny, heart-warming, and insightful. They were timeless.

A Victim of Love and Circumstance

While at SXSW, there is one definitive. You will be taking a chance. It will be choosing between two seemingly excellent showcases, hoping you made the right choice. It will be seeing a performance you know little about, hoping to uncover a hidden gem during the six-day event. All the while in Austin, you wish to see true greatness, unique to you, to your trip, and to your dedication to seeing an insane amount of music in such a short period of time.
