My best friend is the opposite of me. I’m flighty, she’s focused. I’m crazed, she’s calm. I can’t handle being alone, she craves it. In fact at some point in our friendship she told me I was no longer allowed to complain about not having plans for the night, because she didn’t understand why it was an issue. And would then go on to explain how a great night for her (great, people!) could involve a bottle of wine and some Agatha Christie movies.

Show Review: Dirty Projectors with J. Tillman at Brookdale Inn and Spa, 9/26/2010

As I was driving down the windy Bear Creek Lane toward Brookdale, California, it got headlights dark. It was daylight, still, but the sunlight was completely obscured by trees. It was a bit creepy. And I passed yet another sign warning me of more windy roads ahead, and yet another hairpin turn, I thought that this crazy drive through the Santa Cruz Mountains had better be worth the effort. You see, (((FolkYeah!))) has this habit of throwing really cool events in out-of-the-way places, and tonight they were presenting the Dirty Projectors “with special guest” in a room whose claim to fame is that “a river runs through it.” I just had to see it for myself. Show Review: J. Tillman with Pearly Gate Music at The Great American Music Hall, 12/4/09

Things started off looking kind of gloomy over at The Great American. It was 8:30pm, the opening act was set to go on at 9:00pm and there were approximately 30 people in the room (I counted). Sitting by myself at one of the tables that lined the floor, I couldn’t help but sulk at the fact that I was basically working on a Friday night. It took all my energy to keep from putting my head down on the table and taking a nap. Even my trusty sidekick, iPhone, couldn’t help ease my growing boredom.
