Show Review: NOFX Final Tour, Punk in Drublic @ The Cow Palace 09-16-2023

Farewell tours are a strange business. How does a band perform with sincerity and a sense of purpose that feels genuine without the trappings of a cash-grab mentality that us cynical fans have come to expect? I’ve personally never been to a farewell show outside of bands in the local music scene where I grew up, so I wasn’t very sure what to expect aside from what I was seeing on social media. A 40-year-old punk band going on with an absolute bang at each and every show, celebrating not only their longevity but celebrating the music scene that they came up in. What better place than San Francisco, the second home to one of the most iconic bands to come out of the 80s hardcore punk scene in Los Angeles, to wave goodbye to an incredible career?

Vinyl Re-Reissue Spotlight: Group Sex by Circle Jerks

So, this reissue’s first pressing sold out in like a day or so. BUT!!! They are doing ONE MORE PRESSING, and then it’s gone. And, for the next 48 hours, they will also be selling a nifty looking t-shirt from an old flyer. GO HERE TO RESERVE YOUR COPY OF BOTH!

2020 was going to be a great year. My concert calendar was pretty much full for the year by the end of February. One of the most exciting things for me was that Bikini Kill and Circle Jerks, two of bands from my most formative music experiencing years, were going to grace the world with full tours for the first time in decades. Circle Jerks were due to play their debut record, Group Sex, in it’s entirety on this tour. Sadly, I sold my CD of this long ago, back in my most broke days. So, to celebrate, I found myself using Spotify (I know…) to get amped for this tour, as well as introduce my 18-month-old kid to this music. Which did make for epic dance parties throughout the house during the early days of “Shelter In Place,” while awaiting for us to get our act together and stop transmission of the virus so we could enjoy our Summer.

Sadly, as the pandemic progressed, hopes were dimming for that tour to come to fruition. THEN- THE WORST THING HAPPENED!!! Group Sex abruptly disappeared from streaming services. Sure, there are other fine Circle Jerks records, and a live album from the 80’s that features many of these tracks, but it wasn’t the same. (Thank god we can still listen to their Debbie Gibson collaboration!) There was a giant, gaping hole in my child’s hardcore education. But, fear not- it’s coming back! Burger Boogaloo Has Moved To July 2021

“Like a punk rock Leap Year,  BB2021 will be back next July to slam your ass and tickle your musical pleasure!” – John Waters

God. COVID-19 is the worst, and has managed to bring out the worst of humanity, at least in the US and much of Europe. Sadly, because we are in capable of comprehending how helping others avoid getting sick will, in turn, help prevent us from getting sick, everything is being pushed til 2021.

There are a lot of bad people out there, but the organizers of Burger Boogaloo are not those people. Remember when we all gushed over how amazing the Burger Boogaloo 2020 line up was? Well, they worked hard and managed to get nearly every single one of those bands on board for Burger Boogaloo 2021, coming to you July 10th & 11th! That means we get the triumphant Bay Area returns of Bikini Kill, Circle Jerks, and Carbonas. We also get to see California punk legend Alice Bag as well as Bay Area legends Flipper, The Rubinoos, and Pansy Division. We also have Bleached and Shannon Shaw, both of which have released career best records in recent years. Rounding out the line up are The Fevers, Hammered Satin, Midnite Snaxxx, and Younger Lovers. Well, until they release more bands that will inevitably knock your socks off.

So, you know you are going to go. Why don’t you buy your tickets now so you can finally get excited about something? I know damn well I could use a little joy in this world.

Burger Boogaloo 2020’s Lineup IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a lot of people know this, but one of Oakland’s best kept secrets is this little rock festival in Mosswood Park called Burger Boogaloo. And this year’s line up is seriously the most impressive line up they’ve assembled yet! We have Bikini Kill playing their first Bay Area show in 25 years! We were their in April for one of their first shows back, and it was pure sonic catharsis. Also returning to the bay for the first time in over a decade is LA Hardcore legends Circle Jerks. (No word if they will be bringing Debbie Gibson along with them, but we certainly hope so!) And, if you thought those two things were impressive, they are also bringing to the United States for the first time ever, legendary French rock band Plastic Bertrand. And, yes, that does mean I will finally get to live my dream of getting thrown around in a pit to this song.

Filling out the initial line up announcement is LA punk vet Alice Bag, SF punk vets Flipper, Queercore groundbreakers Pansy Division, one of the greatest modern Power Pop bands, Bleached, who literally wrote the only song to ever make me cry, Panty Raid, Fevers, Twompsax, Younger Lovers, Midnite Snaxx, Carbonas  and even more bands will be announced very soon. Oh yeah, and John Waters will be there to MC the party!

The event is in Mosswood Park in Oakland, CA, just a few blocks from Macarthur Bart. The event is happening July 11th-12th, and tickets are available NOW! Just remember, prices will go up, so buy them ASAP.

Show Review: OFF! at Amoeba Records Berkeley, 5/12/2012

Mario Rubalcaba, Keith Morris, and Steven McDonald of OFF!
Mario Rubalcaba, Keith Morris, and Steven McDonald of OFF!

When a band comes to a local record shop to do an in-store appearance, it’s a really unique type of event. Songs are generally stripped down to a more acoustic and delicate format, conversations are had between the band and the crowd with greater regularity and openness, and it’s a guaranteed opportunity for a meet-and-greet that often costs nothing more than the price of the group’s new record — which, in all likelihood, you’re there to buy so that they can sign it. However, not all artists can comfortably fit the first item on the agenda — a quiet show, an intimate arrangement of instruments — into their setup, and when their output’s main focus is blisteringly-fast, unflinchingly-loud, viciously-penned hardcore punk music, it’s not even in the same galaxy. Thus, the four-piece supergroup known as OFF! unleashed their set in Berkeley’s own Amoeba Records very much like they had the previous night at Slim’s in San Francisco: amps piled about, drummer Mario Rubalcaba sandwiched in between the gear on the miniscule stage, and every single object capable of emitting sound cranked into the stratosphere for 30 solid minutes.
