Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 8/18/11-8/24/11

by Dakin Hardwick on August 17, 2011

As we wind down our Summer, it feels good to know that our live music experiences will keep coming at you. Here’s what I think you should be doing this week in San Francisco and it’s surrounding cities.

Thursday, August 18th

David Dondero, The Red Verse, Awahnichi at  Cafe du Nord

David Dondero has been traveling around the globe for many, many years. He was a big influence of Conor Oberst, and is one of my favorite songwriters from the Bay Area.

“Weird Science: An Evening Of Comedy, Science, and 80’s Culture” at California Academy Of Sciences

This is not really a “music” event, but there DJ’s spinning 80’s music. But, we have in the “nerdiest” place in town Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Podcast Live, Adam Savage from Mythbusters doing Stand Up, and a whole lot more awesomeness. This is definitely worth heading back to Golden Gate Park.

Friday, August 19th

Evangalista at Berkeley Art Museum

The amazingly talented & versatile Carla Bozulich is bringing her noisest project, Evangalista, to a museum in Berkeley? Let’s see the guards try to hush this set!

Hank IV, The Midnight Snaxxx at Bender’s Bar (KUSF Benefit)

Public Enemy, ProHoeZak at The Regency Ballroom

Saturday, August 20th – Sunday August 21st

The Be Good Tanyas, Obo Martin (8/20), Sean Hayes (8/21) at The Independent

It’s been about 5 years since Vancouver’s Roots-Americana supergroup The Be Good Tanyas have graced any stage anywhere. This two night stand at The Independent is a very special treat, and you will never see this band this intimate again!

Saturday, August 20th

Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick, Fuel, The Hooks at Fort Mason

Sunday, August 21st

TFDI : Tonty Lucca, Jay Nash, Matt Duke at Cafe du Nord

Monday, August 22nd

Mister Heavenly, WATERS, Niilo Smeds at The Independent

It’s the band that Michael Cera plays bass for!!! Remember them?

Oh wait… wrong band…

Tuesday, August 23rd

311, Sublime with Rome at Shoreline Amphitheater

Hipsters be damned… I’m pretty stoked about this show. And, I bet you secretly are to. This night will be filled with great ear worm hooks, and dancing like, well, white fratboy stoners. There’s nothing wrong with that. And to all the naysayers that are offended by the fact that Sublime are touring without Brad? Those people never saw Sublime live with Brad. Not very good.

The Ettes, Hans Condor, The Bruises at Rickshaw Stop

Wednesday, August 24th

Brian Wilson at The Mountain Winery

He wrote the great American songbook, 1960’s edition. Well, maybe not everything, but he wrote a lot of amazing songs. You should see him live. It’s a lot of fun!
