Show Review: Rusko at The Mezzanine, 9/28/2010

by David Price on September 29, 2010

If you’re not into electronic music, then Rusko might be hard for you to swallow. However, if you are, it might be exactly that new pill you’ve been asking about that no one seems to have. Rusko is undisputedly one of the premier dupstep producers and DJs in the world, and also one of the busiest. By the end of 2010 he will have attacked San Francisco four times! Cramming all those gigs in might seem tiresome, that is until you see Rusko. With more power and energy than that drumming pink bunny, Rusko takes hype and turns the heat up. In fact. the heat was quite literally turned up Last night at the Mezzanine mostly due to the 80 degree weather outside at 10pm, but also due to a room full of half-naked 20-somethings most likely juiced on more then just a tall boy of Pabst.

When Rusko starts off his set, it’s immediately apparent that he’s not a DJ that just hide behind his laptop. One-upping Stave Aoki on the energy level, ok, well maybe not one upping, but matching…. coming close, Rusko’s likely just as excited to be playing as everyone else is to be listening. The thumping synth of tracks like “Woo Boost” take over your body and you just find yourself uncontrollably nodding back and forth. This sort of involuntary response to Rusko establishes him as a leader in the dupstep world. Dubstep has been described as a movement, and as self important as that sounds I suppose it’s justified after an hour-and-a-half of uncontrollable head bobbing. There must be something about that rocking motion that makes time fly because, before ya knew it, it was over.

While saying goodbye, he announced that he’ll be back in December. The date has yet to be announced, but judging from San Francisco’s reception of him last night, the venue will grow in size, and hopefully ventilation capabilities.
